Introduction to polymer, polymer morphology; polymer topology, classifications of polymer based on their applications, thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers, brief account of polymer physical and mechanical properties. Molecular weights, molecular weight distributions and their effects on the processing of polymers. Many type of polymer syntheses reactions, chain-growth and step-growth polymerization. These includes - radical, cationic, anionic, “living polymers”, coordination polymerizations, olefin metathesis and group-transfer polymerizations. Their mechanisms and kinetics of reaction will be discussed. Last but not least important are reactions on polymer chain itself, it could be a polymer degradation or polymer modifications. New emerging technologies require some modifications to polymer to be use in the highly demanding environments.
